Dill Dal-Sabsige Soppu Pappu

Also called as Sabsige Soppu(dill leaves) in Kannada, this is a dish that I heard that is made in karnataka from my mother in law,I’ve never had it or made it before. I added Dosakay(apple cucumber) to it along with Tomato.Though it is traditionally made with moong beans I decided to make it with toor dal just because toor dal goes well with dosakay.
Preparation time:30 minutes
Serves:6

Ingredients:
2 bunches dill(stalks removed and chopped)
1 cup Toor dal
1 large Tomato chopped
1 small apple cucumber(2.5 inches diameter)
3 cloves Garlic  minced
1 teaspoon grated Ginger
1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
dash of black pepper
6 green chili minced
1/2 medium onion diced
Salt  to taste
1 spring Curry leaves
1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon ghee
Procedure:
1. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker and cumin seeds, mustard seeds and curry leaves
2.Add ginger, garlic, green chili, onion and turmeric and sauté for a minute.Add the apple cucumber and saute for 2 minutes.
3.Add the dill leaves and saute for 1 minute.

4.Add the chopped tomatoes and saute for 1 minute.

5. Add washed dal, Pour in three cups of water and add salt.Pressure cook for 4 whistles. When the steam has gone, add the ground black pepper and stir.

Tips:
This goes well with rice and ghee.

If your tomatoes are not tangy enough you can add 1/4 teaspoon of tamarind for a little tanginess.
