Spring is here and Mangoes are in season.Mango dal or Mamidikaya pappu is a tangy,delicious and much cherished Andhra dish.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
3/4 cup toor dal
1/2 cup diced green mango
1/2 cup diced onion
1/4 teaspoon fenugreek powder/methi powder
1/8 teaspoon turmeric powder
6 green chillis slit lengthwise
1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
salt to taste
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
3 garlic cloves diced
3 dry red chillis
1 sprig curry leaves
1-2 teaspoons ghee or oil
1 .Take the dal, mango, onion,salt and green chillis, add 3 cups of water and pressure cook for 4 whistles and turn off the stove.
2.Heat ghee/oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and let splutter, add cumin seeds, garlic, red chillis and curry leaves and let splutter.
3. Add the tempering to the dal and add the red chili powder and fenugreek powder, adjust salt and cook for 10 minutes on medium low and turn off the flame.
Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves.
Serve with rice or roti.
