Purnam Charu-Hoolige Saaru-Vanchina charu

I was introduced to this dish by my friends mother.They are residents of karnataka.I was planning to make bobbatlu(puran poli) then she said get the liquid and some of the purnam mixture so we can make this charu.I loved it.
Preparation Time 25 minutes


1/3 cup Purnam(Puran-see recipe here)
2 teaspoons Tamarind paste
1 teaspoon rasam powder
1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
Salt to taste
2 teaspoons oil
1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon red chili powder
1 stem curry leaves
1 pinch Asafoetida
1 teaspoon chana dal
1 teaspoon urad dal

1.Heat oil in a saucepan and add chana dal and urad dal and let them brown lightly.Add mustard and cumin seeds and let splutter.Add the turmeric, and curry leaves and let splutter.

2.Add 2 cups of water and the purnam, tamarind paste,salt , mix well and let the liquid come to a boil

3.Add rasam powder,asafetida and chili powder and boil for 6 minutes.

Add more chili powder if you like more spice.
Add more water to reduce sweetness if you like.

Add more tamarind to increase tangy flavor if you like.
